Instructions
Who knew there would be instructions with candles! There's a lot more to proper candle care than you may realize.
To get the best performance out of your candle, please follow these guidelines:
FIRST BURN:
You must burn the candle long enough for the melt pool to extend all the way to the sides of the jar. The melt pool is the layer of melted wax on the top of the candle.
The first time you light the candle, you need to let it burn long enough to achieve a FULL melt pool. If you extinguish the candle before you get a full melt pool, on subsequent burns you may notice the candle "tunneling". That is where only the center part of the candle melts and the wax along the perimeter of the jar never melts.
Achieving a full melt pool may take up to 4 hours.
SECOND BURN:
Each additional time you light the candle, trim the wick to about 1/4 to 3/8" of an inch. Too long of a wick can cause the candle to not burn properly.
If you notice a carbon build up on top of the wick (known as a mushroom) snip it off with a pair of scissors before you light the wick.
ADDITIONAL BURNS:
Follow the same instructions as for the second burn. Always trim the wick and snip off any mushroom that may have formed.
LAST BURN:
How do you know when you're at the last burn? Once about 1/2 of an inch of wax remains in the candle, the candle is finished. You never want to burn lower than that. Burning lower than that may uncover the bottom of the wick and the wick will no longer be able to feed up the fuel, which is the wax and fragrance oil.
ADDITONAL NOTES:
There is a sticker on the bottom of each candle with safety tips. I'll list them here too.
1. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
2. Keep candle away from drafts. Drafts may cause the flame to flicker wildly and produce black smoke (among other dangers)
3. Keep a burning candle out of reach of kids, pets, and immature soldiers!
4. Keeping a candle away from anything flammable is probably the best way not to burn your house down!
